Whenever we’re trying to achieve or create something worthwhile, we all start in the same place: wherever we are right now. We start the journey equipped with what we know and think we might need. However, we don’t know what we don’t know, and what we don’t know is precisely what we need to get there.
After all, if we did know, wouldn’t we be there already?
The thing is, to get from where we are to where we want to be, there are things we’ll need to pick up along the way that we don’t have today.
Lessons.
Skills.

The (Real) Journey to Your Goal
When we think of the path towards our goal, we might think of a straight line from A to B. Here to there. Each step comes neatly and naturally after the last and is perfectly prepared for ahead of time. Like the 100-meter dash.
Oh, no.
See, when we start taking action towards a goal, the path from A to B is anything but straight. Instead, it goes up and down, like waves. These waves—these ups and downs—are exactly what we need to learn and improve.
The ups are things that work. The downs are things that don’t.
The ups are wins. The downs are lessons.
The ups are successes. The downs are challenges.
The ups are sometimes better than we could have ever imagined. The downs, sometimes worse than we could have imagined.
See, the path from today to your goal isn’t straight. It isn’t like a math equation where, with predetermined steps taken in order, and where you can always expect a predictable outcome.
There will be hiccups. Speedbumps. Uphill battles. Messes. Setbacks. Pain. A crisis. An injury.
“Wait, this wasn’t part of the plan!”
Then, you’ll discover what you didn’t know you didn’t know, and you’ll step powerfully forward with this newly acquired wisdom.
On the upswing, celebrate! Smile. Enjoy. When things dip, embrace the lessons. This is the learning; the primary ingredient of growth. The foundation of your success.
Why?
Because what you need to know in order to reach your goal can be found in what doesn’t work.
That’s why your challenges are gifts.
So, what’s the hype?
The hype is that eeeeverything’s going wrong and that the crisis is destroying business.
The truth is that the crisis is actually strengthening those who see it as an opportunity to future-forward their business.
These businesses are the ones that thrive.
This is nothing new. In 2008, the hype was the market crash. The downturn. But then, there was a correction, and those who were looking spotted opportunity and experienced massive growth.
Crises are a great example of a below-the-line experience on our journey toward our vision. We didn’t want the crisis, we didn’t bring it on ourselves, and maybe we didn’t even prepare for it.
But, it’s here. Now what?
Make the best of it. Don’t believe the hype. Find the lesson, learn, and grow. Celebrate your wins, no matter how small, to keep energized, inspired, and focused.
Because when you change the way you look at a challenge, solutions will appear.
